Status and Trends of Wetlands in the Conterminous United States 1986 to 1997

At the time of European settlement, the area that is now the conterminous United States contained an estimated 221 million acres (89.5 million ha) of wetlands. Over time, wetlands have been drained, dredged, filled, leveled, and flooded to the extent that less than half of the original wetland acreageremains (Dahl 1990).
