Central Florida Water Initiative: An Overview

Florida's water management districts are committed tofinding new ways of meeting the demand for freshwater.Historically, the Floridan aquifer system has suppliedthe vast majority of the water used in the central Floridaarea. The boundaries of three water managementdistricts — the St. Johns River Water ManagementDistrict, South Florida Water Management Districtand Southwest Florida Water Management District— meet in the area. The three districts are studyingwhether the Floridan aquifer system is reaching itssustainable limits of use and exploring the need todevelop supplemental sources of water.
