Arsenic (As) contamination in soil and groundwater throughout the world has resulted insignificant impacts to human health. The tube wells installed in Bangladesh, initiallydesigned to substitute groundwater for polluted surface water, ended up exposing millions ofpeople to extremely high levels of As. Prior to the installation of the tube wells, there was noindication of As poisoning. In fact, initiating groundwater as drinking water was designed todecrease the incidence of surface water-borne diseases (Smedley and Kinniburgh 2002). ...
